CUNA offers these tips for consumers with credit card debt:

1. If you can't pay the bill in full, try to consistently pay more than the minimum.
2. If possible, don't add new credit-card debt while you pay off the current balance.
3. Pay debts with the highest interest rate first, while making at least minimum payments on all other debts.
4. Don't ignore creditors; call to work out a repayment plan.
5. Ask your credit union for help. The Consumer Credit Counseling Service can help negotiate with creditors. Call 800-388-2227.
6. Beware credit repair clinics.
7. Reduce unwanted credit card solicitations (optoutprescreen.com or call 888-5-opt-out).
8. Build a savings cushion for future emergencies. Pay yourself first.
